Guest Post @ Flights, Tights and Movie Nights!

Things are going to be rather slow around Silver Emulsion this week, but I did get one piece of writing done this weekend: a defense of Superman IV: The Quest for Peace for its inclusion in the 100 Essential Superhero Movies list that Bubbawheat at Flights, Tights and Movie Nights is putting together! In it I try my best to explain why Superman IV is a worthy entry in the series, and for some reason I chose to try the high road approach instead of simply describing all the B-Movie joys that the film provides. Check it out here! And don’t forget to throw the film a vote if you think I did a good job selling you on why Superman IV is a worthwhile inclusion in the 100 Essential Superhero Movies list!

Starring James P. Bennett, Mikey Graham, Johnny Murray, Michael Regan, Conor O’Shea, Greg Weir, Barry Smith, Paudie Greene, Edward Healy, Peter Crinion, Colin Hamilton

Directed by Shay Casserley & Simon Linscheid

Expectations: High. This one better be as great as I hope.

On the general scale:

On the B-movie scale:

Fatal Deviation is a special movie. It’s Ireland’s first full-length martial arts picture, and it’s an incredible piece of low-budget entertainment. You wanna read a review of said B-Movie gem? Oh yeah? Well… OK.

But you’ll have to go to Rodney’s website Fernby Films to check it out, because I reviewed the film as my entry in his annual event, Worst Film Week! So go check it out!

This is a fan-made, joke trailer, but it’s all I could find.

The Dark Crystal (1982)

Expectations: One of my favorites. I watch it every few years.

Here’s another review that I did for my buddy JP’s blog. I won two DVDs in his Oscar contest with the condition that I would review them for his site. Sounds like a fair trade to me! The first review went up a while ago for Buster Keaton’s The General and you can check that one out through the link a few words back. This week I fulfill my obligation with J.P. and with the review for Jim Henson’s masterful 1982 fantasy classic, The Dark Crystal. Check it out on J.P.’s website by clicking here!

The General (1926)

The General (1926)

Starring Buster Keaton, Marion Mack, Glen Cavender, Jim Farley, Frederick Vroom, Charles Henry Smith, Frank Barnes, Joe Keaton, Mike Donlin, Tom Nawn

Directed by Clyde Bruckman & Buster Keaton

Expectations: High, I’ve seen this multiple times over the years.

JP from J.P.’s I’m Outta Here Movie Thoughts was kind enough to host an Oscar contest back when those things were going on. I ended up tying with the expert, but JP insisted that I deserved the prize of two DVDs or Blu-Rays of my choice. Can’t argue with hospitality like that! In any case, the first film I selected is Buster Keaton’s 1926 film, The General, as you probably already noticed. So don’t waste any time here, go to JP’s website and check out my review of the film!

Tai Chi Master (1993)

Tai Chi Master [太極張三豐] (1993)

Starring Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh, Chin Siu Ho, Fennie Yuen, Yuen Cheung Yan, Lau Shun, Yu Hai, Sun Jian Kui

Directed by Yuen Woo Ping

Expectations: High. Haven’t seen this one in years and remember really liking it.

We’re doing something different with this review. I won JP’s DVD comment contest and he let me pick any DVD or Blu-Ray I wanted. Oh, the possibilities! I ended up deciding on this film and I’m glad I did. In honor of this awesome gesture, my review will be featured exclusively on JP’s website, complete with neato video clips from the film selected by yours truly. So what are you waiting for?

Head over there now and check out the review!
