From Around the Web… (12/11/11)

OK, here’s some more awesome links from awesome sites around the web! Enjoy!

First off, my old buddy Uncle Jasper has started up a blog of his own called, Shit on my iPhone!
If you read his film reviews here, you’ll know he can sling words with the best of them,
so do yourself a favor and check out his shit.

Michael at Kiai Kick! has a great review of the Chang Cheh film, Five Shaolin Masters!
It’s gonna take me a long, long time before I get to review this one in my chronological series
so definitely check out Michael’s take in the meantime.

And speaking of the Shaw Brothers, 104-year-old Run Run Shaw is finally retiring!
He’s been working in TV for a while, but those days are now over.
So long Run Run, you and your brothers were responsible for creating and shepherding
the martial arts film as we all have come to know it.

Kai at Man, I Love Films has a fun list of graphic novels that would make great movies!
Killing Joke and Dark Knight Returns would be awesome!

Fitz has some early posters for Tarantino’s next film Django Unchained!

If you’d like to read an opposite but well-written opinion of Super 8, look no further than Fernby Films!

Dangerous Meredith has a great write-up surrounding the commentary on
The Replacement Killers, Chow Yun-Fat’s first American film. It features
some great insights on the East/West filmmaking clash and is recommended
to anyone interested in such things.

That’s all folks!

OK, here’s some more awesome links from awesome sites around the web! Enjoy!

Doug Tilley has a great feature on Daily Grindhouse called No-Budget Nightmares.
I found out about it from the podcast version he does with Moe from Drunk on VHS, which I highly recommend.
Here’s Doug’s latest written entry into the series, a piece on Nightmare Asylum!
How’s that for a shitload of plugs in one plug?

Paragraph Film Reviews has a look at the Hong Kong flick that inspired The Departed, Infernal Affairs! I still haven’t seen it.

Top 10 Films has a rep for awesome and inventive lists and their latest Top 10 Christmas Films of the 1980s continues the trend.

Screened.com gives us a rundown of how to make sure you get to see the new Dark Knight footage if you’re so inclined.

Awesome genre blog Varied Celluloid kicks off another Kung Fu Christmas with a look at Militant Eagle.

And here’s a cool video from around the time of The Empire Strikes Back release
where some initial, and different, plans for the prequels are slyly revealed. It’s neat.

That’s all folks!

From Around the Web… (11/20/11)

Well, it had to happen. I missed last week’s links and I almost missed doing this one. It’s hard to keep it up.

Rodney at Fernby Films gives a great review of a film I’m quite excited to see: Attack the Block!

While searching around the web for other’s impressions of Drive, I ran into this. It’s pretty impressive.

Anomalous Material whips up a Top 10 list of Lars Von Trier films.
Haven’t seen them all, but I would have included Manderlay and Dancer in the Dark would top the list.
Looking forward to seeing Melancholia soon!

Michael at Kiai-Kick! busts out the classic Jackie with a review of one of my old favorites, Armour of God!
Supposedly Jackie’s making another of these and I hope it lives up to the legacy of the series so far!

The Daily Grindhouse has a great list of titles on Netflix Instant that are definitely flying
under the radar of most viewers! If only I had more time, I’d watch them all!

That’s all folks!

From Around the Web… (11/6/11) Tree of Life Edition

In an effort to increase the regularity in which I visit other blogger’s websites, here’s a collection of awesome posts from awesome websites around the web.

This week is special though, as I have seen one of the most divisive films of the year, Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life. While my review will be up later in the week, I thought this week’s From Around the Web… would be a great place to showcase a bunch of other reviews from, well, around the web. And for the full Tree of Life effect, you should whisper-read only pieces of these reviews to yourself. Trust me, they’ll be more powerful that way.

The Tree of Life reviews (in no particular order):

Cut the Crap Movie Reviews
Anomalous Material
The Matinee
Cinema Sights
Bitchin’ Film Reviews
Marshall and the Movies
Paragraph Film Reviews
The M0vie Blog
Big Thoughts from a Small Mind
GMan Reviews
John Likes Movies

And finally, a piece of Tree of Life humor that is spot-on brilliant.
