Lucas was very much aware of Japanese cinema at the time. And Kinji Fukasaku, while not of Kurosawa fame, was a relatively well known director in the 70s (his peak popularity, in fact, surpassed only in 2000 after the release of Battle Royale). So it is very likely that Lucas saw this movie in 1978.

On a different note, I just discovered this podcast and have been enjoying it so far. Is there anyway to add your back catalogue to my podcast app? I added the podbean RSS fead, but it only goes down to episode 90.

Thanks, and keep up the great work!
