8 Years!?!

Silver Emulsion turned 8 years old on April 12th, but once again I’ve been too lazy and depressed to write this annual post about it. The last year was a rough one for me; I largely managed to keep the reviews flowing fairly well, but prior to this week there wasn’t a new review in almost two months. Explaining the specifics would be pointless, so let’s just say that I got extremely burned out with running the site. I’ve had a number of reviews written for weeks, just sitting there waiting to be edited, but somehow that was a task too herculean to overcome. Thankfully, I managed to get one out earlier this week, and one is coming tomorrow, and hopefully I’ll be able to continue this momentum. I’m still very committed to finishing all my series, so never fear, but these sudden hiatuses will probably come up now and again, as well.

What’s going on in the next year / Did I predict correctly last year?

  • If all had gone to plan, the Jackie series would be done by now. As it stands, the next film to do is Police Story 2013, so I’m relatively close. Should be done by next year, for sure. I hope. 🙂
  • Like Jackie, if all had gone to plan I could have finished the Full Moon series last year. Didn’t happen, but I’m pretty darn close with only around 15 films left. I think I can definitively say this will be done by next year, too, although I’ve only done two reviews in the last two months so who knows!
  • I was correct that I’d be into 1977 in the Shaw series by now, so that’s nice. There’s a lot of movies in the upcoming years, so I’ll probably be mid-1979 next year if I’m able to keep my pace up. If I finish the other series, though, I might be able to squeak out an extra Shaw review here or there. Don’t hold your breath!

Here’s to another year of reviews and podcasts! Thanks to everyone who reads, listens, shares, comments, feedbacks or otherwise contributes to Silver Emulsion. I’m grateful for all of it and I sincerely appreciate it.

7 Years Old!

Alright, here we are again; another year is in the can! Silver Emulsion entered its 7th year about six weeks ago (on April 12th), but I just now had the time and the inclination to write this thing. I think I’ll try to keep this one short and sweet, but who knows… we could have a 2000-word behemoth on our hands by the end of this.

Well, I’ve done pretty well this year, keeping my nose to the grindstone and putting out reviews consistently. The Arnold series was finished off in the last year, including all the cameo roles I had on the list. I’ve also started the Silver Emulsion podcast, and somehow it’s already been nearly a year since I started doing that! I’ve also started writing reviews for the official Shaw Brothers website run by Celestial Pictures!

What’s going on in the next year / Did I predict correctly last year?

  • I predicted I might be close to finishing Jackie, but what’s remaining is still in the double digits. I am well into the 2000s, though, so I will most assuredly finish the series in Year 7… and maybe even before 2017 is over!
  • I just did a count and at my current pace of a new review every other week, I have almost exactly one year of Full Moon reviews left… which is pretty much exactly where I predicted I’d be last year. I must have cheated and counted them out or got a Review Almanac from the future or something. 🙂 But Jackie should finish first, so theoretically this would finish off sooner than one year, too.
  • I’m very happy to have exceeded my conservative Shaw Brothers prediction, ending up almost done with 1975 at this point. At this rate, I should be somewhere around 1977 by next year.
    • Although… with the Jackie and Full Moon series both potentially ending before Emulsion Year 8 begins, I might even be further along! Let’s hope that’s the case, and that I can successfully manage to then bang out two Shaw reviews a week! We’ll see!

Anyway, it’s been a great year for Silver Emulsion and I hope it was a good one for you, too. Here’s to another year of reviews! Thanks to everyone who reads, shares, comments or otherwise contributes to the overall thing that this website is. Hahaha, “the overall thing that this website is,” whatever the hell that means. 🙂

6 Years of Emulsification!

Another year has flown by and here I am once again, wondering what to say and staring at a picture of a cat using a computer. In last year’s update, I talked about stepping back from Silver Emulsion a bit to focus more on my caregiving duties for my wonderful wife who unfortunately has multiple sclerosis. This year was a further progression of this, but I still managed to keep the reviews flowing pretty regularly. I did take a week off here and there, so I guess I can officially say that I’m not wicked. 🙂

I can also officially say that at this point, my Arnold review series is all but done. For once, one of my “next year” predictions in a status update was correct! Do I win something? [Editor’s note: No.] I only have a few cameo roles to do Quick Take reviews for, and those won’t drop for a while as one of them is the film version of Raymond Chandler’s The Long Goodbye. I refuse to watch that one until I read the book, and I can’t read the book until I finish re-reading the other Chandler novels. I’ve got a couple more to go. In any case, outside of this final cameo post and whatever new movies Arnold is in, I can move my attention to finishing the other three series that I committed myself to (quite some time ago now!).

Year 5 Status Update

Doing an update post has become a yearly tradition, and while I don’t think anyone else really cares about them, it helps me process what I’ve done and what I’m wanting to do in the coming year. I usually post these on or very close to the good ol’ anniversary date, but since I was doing my blowout giveaway extravaganza I thought I’d let it slide a little. Anyway, here it is! Bet you’re glad you didn’t hold your breath waitin’ for it!

Looking back at last year, I did a lot of stepping away from the site. The fairly hectic and generally dependable weekly schedule I set up for myself was thrown in the trash, and I found myself just struggling to keep things afloat. This was for many reasons, with the main ones being my general stress level and the increasingly more demanding caregiving I do for my lovely partner. I can happily report that this move towards not caring as much about the site has definitely helped. I’m still a neurotic, obsessive bundle of anger, but I try my best to not worry about these little things like Silver Emulsion. It’s only a fun hobby, after all.

This update comes on the heels of FINALLY finishing my first long-running, ongoing series: my ever-expanding look at the work of writer/director Sam Fuller. I’m very excited to be done with it, because that means that everything else will be moving just a little bit quicker without any specific speed-up on my part. That basically boils down to posting about Jackie Chan and Arnold movies about twice as often as I have been over the past year or so. Yay! I’ve also recently figured a schedule out that may make it possible for me to increase my speed even further, but I haven’t tried it out yet so no guarantees. Just keep your eyes peeled and if you notice more than two reviews a week going up with any kind of regularity, you’ll know I have been successful. Of course, these hopeful words of “speeding things up” are all dependent on everything at home continuing as it has for a little while, so if things slip here and there that’s probably why.

As for where I think I’ll be next year in regards to my ongoing series: I’ll say that Arnold will be done (outside of a cameo or two, maybe), which will in turn further speed up the Jackie Chan reviews (which most likely won’t be done), as well as the neverending Full Moon and Shaw Brothers series. I will note that if I were able to get the Full Moon series back to once a week, I could likely be done by next year… but that’s not gonna happen.

I think that’s all I have to sort out this year, but I thought it might be fun to post a poll about these ongoing series that I’m spending so much time on, just to see if anyone actually cares. So… do you? 🙂 Select all answers that apply, and feel free to write in suggestions in the comments!

Year 4… Engage!

se_4thanniversaryTime flies when you’re distracting yourself from life’s constant struggles! Here I am again, staring at the calendar and realizing that yet another year has passed and I’m still writing reviews. I started way back on April 12, 2010! Hard to believe.

April 2013–April 2014 brought many great movies, but I’m too lazy to look through the reviews and see exactly what they were. 🙂 I did run through all the Superman movies, as well as Peter Jackson’s filmography. There were a couple of cool milestones the site hit during this year also, most notably breaking the 1000 post barrier and Stephen reaching 100 reviews (with this week’s look at Birth)! So let’s dream big! 2000 posts total and 200 reviews from Stephen next year!

It’s my anniversary tradition to write about what I hope to do in the coming year, as well as check in on last year’s predictions and see just how far out in left field I was. I remember thinking I would be done with the Full Moon series two years ago, and yet still in 2014 there’s quite a bit more to go. Hahahaha. Woody Allen once said, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans,” but at this stage of the game my plans don’t get that far. I plan and I laugh, because I almost instantly see through my own bullshit. In any case, here’s another load of false promises and ideas of what Year 4 at Silver Emulsion might be like!

Happy Belated 3rd Birthday, Silver Emulsion!

496x700px-LL-3f781117_happy-birthday-catHey look! I was so busy bustin’ out that CZ12 review and getting everything ready for this week that I totally forgot to recognize the blog’s 3rd anniversary! It was Friday, the 12th, and I can’t believe I’ve lasted this long. I love writing reviews for this place and I’m feeling stronger than ever. So hopefully you’re not sick of my rants against digital grading and the inequality of modern film amidst fun criticism of blockbusters and B-movies alike, because there’s much more to come!

I’ve made it something of a tradition to look forward to what I might do in the coming year, but this year I’d like to start by looking back on the year that’s passed. 2012 was a huge year for me personally. I moved away from the town where I spent most of my childhood (and all of my adult life up to that point) after living there for 26 years. This was an emotional, backbreaking experience, but somehow I was still able to keep a slow trickle of reviews appearing on the site. 2012 also brought along Stephen, who’s been doing anime reviews for the site for over a year now! I’m very happy to have him on-board. We also collaborated on the very fun Futures Passed event, Stephen’s excellent idea that I very gleefully ran with. And because this is really more about the blogging year as defined by birth date (April — April), “last” year also brought along Syreeta’s wonderful contributions over the two-week Valentine’s Day event! I must say that I often dread doing these events, but they always turn out much better than I could have ever hoped, and the Valentine’s Event was one of my favorite ever. And now I can call to the mind the image of Jamie Lee Curtis and John Travolta gyrating like the sexual turbines they are (or were), and that will always make me laugh/cringe/smile.

Looking back at last year’s birthday post, I’ve actually started the Jackie Chan series I alluded to in the post (thanks to the prodding of Uncle Jasper), and my prophecy that I’d only watch a few Sam Fuller movies during that year was mostly true.
