Goodness gracious, 88 Films are coming to the US and they’re bringing Shaw Brothers Blu-rays with them! Between the Arrow announcement and this, Shaw fans in the US should be very excited!
88’s first release will be for Jimmy Wang Yu’s landmark kung fu film, The Chinese Boxer! It’s set to release November 9, 2021, and it will have commentary, interviews and more to fill out the package. I have all of 88’s UK Shaw Brothers releases, so I can vouch for their fantastic output firsthand! I can’t wait to check out their first US Shaw Brothers release. But that’s not all… the announcement also included images of future releases (see below)!
The above image teases the following future releases:
- The Chinese Boxer (1970) AKA Hammer of God [Review]
- Disciples of Shaolin (1975) [Review]
- Flying Guillotine 2 (1978) [Review]
- Shaolin Mantis (1978) [Review]
- Monkey Kung Fu (1979)
- Flag of Iron (1980)
- Martial Club (1981)
- Legendary Weapons of China (1982)
- Human Lanterns (1982)
- Hero (1997)
The announcement doesn’t say if these are limited releases, but I’d buy now to avoid future disappointment! Pre-orders are live at Amazon, Diabolik DVD, or your retailer of choice!
Hey Will, hope all is Well. Thanks for the occasional posts here (better than none). Watched the top 4 on this list recently then read your Reviews, mostly agreeing as usual with your Opinions (more eloquently than I could output them). The Jimmy Wang Yu was particularly surprising as the Movie got more engaging as it went on. The ‘Disciples of Shaolin’ was very stylishly made. Mantis was hilarious how he was mimicking that bug. And ‘Guillotine 2’ was a hot mess but still entertaining in its own way. Check out 2020’s ‘The Paper Tigers’ if you have some free time from your obligations man (filmed in Seattle from what i can tell) Hope Steven’s okay too man, Nicholas
Hi Nick, we are both doing OK, thanks for asking. Wish I could post more these days, but just have too much going on to devote the time to this. Glad you got to see some Shaw movies and enjoyed them! I have heard some good things about Paper Tigers.
Yeah , it’s a bit like ‘Cobra kai’ but the Action is more authentic. The filmmakers in some interviews acknowledge how modern martial arts Movies are overly nostalgic for the glory days, they seem to tap into something unique , a push in the right direction hopefully. Anyways check this guy out if you have a minute, guinness book world record for most thorough Movie Reviewer ever IMO:

He really could do with an Editor though, amazing he hasn’t found one before his recent 600 Reviews Milestone 😮 o-:
Great website; very helpful resource for movie titles especially for Shaw Brothers. I listened to your latest podcast. I hope things improve for you soon. I wish you and your wife the best. Come back when it’s right for you. There’s a lot of reviews, lists and podcasts to keep me busy for a long while. Cheers Barry
Thanks so much! Enjoy!
