Episode 3! I haven’t quit yet! Even more rambling, and now with added fan noise!
Take a listen as I talk about the 1973 film Messiah of Evil, an underseen horror film from Willard Huyck & Gloria Katz (who gave us the film version Howard the Duck!).
Messiah of Evil is available on a bunch of ugly public domain DVDs, but if you really want to watch it the Code Red Blu-ray is the one to get. It’s available at the Code Red BigCartel store, which goes up and down periodically as Code Red is a one-man operation. So, basically if the link doesn’t work, try again in a couple of days. There’s also a Code Red DVD version on Amazon, but it’s OOP and currently more expensive than the Blu-ray.

Honestly, the rambling is kinda fun. Jumping from Messiah of Evil to Ben & Jerry’s to Star Wars was pretty funny. Definitely a high tangent level here, whether that’s a good thing or not.
Your usual co-hosts were abnormally quiet, but I guess they got taken over by Fan Noise and Deep Inhalation. Not that I’m trying to add things to be self conscious about, mind you.
I actually have been a bit curious about the music. I’m not much of a music aficionado, so I haven’t recognized any of it so far. But I do have to say that I find your intros very entertaining, so no worries there.
Your description of Messiah of Evil was making me think of Gozu by Takashi Miike, but that’s probably just because they are both in the same “genre” I suppose of normal person wanders into a strange town and everyone is really weird. I think I need a new name for that genre. It doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue very well…
Hahaha, glad you enjoyed the rambles, as I imagine they will continue in a similar vein in future episodes. This was the first one I was able to record in one go and eventually I want to get it where I don’t have to edit at all. I get closer each time. The fan I usually shut off because it’s loud as hell, but I forgot until partway through. The heavy breathing I didn’t even notice until you said something, and now it’s all I hear! Hahahaha. I can fix that by moving the mic a bit, but when I did this one I didn’t check it at all, I just started. Will try and remember for next time. I think I just need a better mic so that I can comfortably be myself and laugh and stuff without all these odd issues.
The intros are probably my favorite part to do. They’re very fun to work on. Thanks for the feedback on the music. Jasper chimed in to the positive as well, so as you may have noticed, I went ahead and added Music Notes to the posts. They’re in a little clickable spoiler thingie because I do prefer them to be a surprise upon listening!
Haven’t seen Gozu, but I’m definitely interested of course. That does seem to be a common sub-genre in the horror film. There’s “Small Town Horror” but I don’t know if usually includes outsiders coming in. Whatever. It does now!
It’s weird, I checked out Messiah of Evil on a whim at the video store out here not too long ago, not knowing squat about it. My socks got blown off watching it! There’s some scenes in there, like in the supermarket, the theater, etc. that were perfectly executed in giving the heebie-jeebies! What’s weird is not two days later after watching it, I was unloading packages at a shitty FedEx job that I quit, and I ended up coming by the 35mm film cans of Messiah of Evil! I tried telling my burly coworker of what an amazing coincidence that was, but he basically just farted in my direction. Now it’s weird seeing you review it too! It deserves some more attention! A very underrated gem I think. Keep up the podcasts! They’re better than gold… they’re silver. SilverEmulsion.com.
