Time flies when you’re distracting yourself from life’s constant struggles! Here I am again, staring at the calendar and realizing that yet another year has passed and I’m still writing reviews. I started way back on April 12, 2010! Hard to believe.
April 2013–April 2014 brought many great movies, but I’m too lazy to look through the reviews and see exactly what they were. I did run through all the Superman movies, as well as Peter Jackson’s filmography. There were a couple of cool milestones the site hit during this year also, most notably breaking the 1000 post barrier and Stephen reaching 100 reviews (with this week’s look at Birth)! So let’s dream big! 2000 posts total and 200 reviews from Stephen next year!
It’s my anniversary tradition to write about what I hope to do in the coming year, as well as check in on last year’s predictions and see just how far out in left field I was. I remember thinking I would be done with the Full Moon series two years ago, and yet still in 2014 there’s quite a bit more to go. Hahahaha. Woody Allen once said, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans,” but at this stage of the game my plans don’t get that far. I plan and I laugh, because I almost instantly see through my own bullshit. In any case, here’s another load of false promises and ideas of what Year 4 at Silver Emulsion might be like!

Hey look! I was so busy bustin’ out that CZ12 review and getting everything ready for this week that I totally forgot to recognize the blog’s 3rd anniversary! It was Friday, the 12th, and I can’t believe I’ve lasted this long. I love writing reviews for this place and I’m feeling stronger than ever. So hopefully you’re not sick of my rants against digital grading and the inequality of modern film amidst fun criticism of blockbusters and B-movies alike, because there’s much more to come!
I’ve made it something of a tradition to look forward to what I might do in the coming year, but this year I’d like to start by looking back on the year that’s passed. 2012 was a huge year for me personally. I moved away from the town where I spent most of my childhood (and all of my adult life up to that point) after living there for 26 years. This was an emotional, backbreaking experience, but somehow I was still able to keep a slow trickle of reviews appearing on the site. 2012 also brought along Stephen, who’s been doing anime reviews for the site for over a year now! I’m very happy to have him on-board. We also collaborated on the very fun Futures Passed event, Stephen’s excellent idea that I very gleefully ran with. And because this is really more about the blogging year as defined by birth date (April — April), “last” year also brought along Syreeta’s wonderful contributions over the two-week Valentine’s Day event! I must say that I often dread doing these events, but they always turn out much better than I could have ever hoped, and the Valentine’s Event was one of my favorite ever. And now I can call to the mind the image of Jamie Lee Curtis and John Travolta gyrating like the sexual turbines they are (or were), and that will always make me laugh/cringe/smile.
Looking back at last year’s birthday post, I’ve actually started the Jackie Chan series I alluded to in the post (thanks to the prodding of Uncle Jasper), and my prophecy that I’d only watch a few Sam Fuller movies during that year was mostly true.

So yesterday was Silver Emulsion’s 2nd anniversary. I started it up on April 12, 2010 and have been going strong ever since. It’s more fun than ever and I have no plans of stopping any time soon. I have far too many ambitious ideas and projects to get through before that happens.
I don’t have anything witty, funny, or touching to say about the day, but I will say this: Thanks for stopping by and reading a review (or two, or three, etc.) I really appreciate it. I know there’s a shit-ton of movie review blogs out there, so I’m always happy when your search for “NUDE BARBARIAN MOVIES” or “DRY HUMPING GRANNIES” points you here.
Looking forward into Year 3:
- I hope to be fairly close to finishing the long-running project of reviewing all of Empire International/Full Moon’s films. I haven’t counted but I think by this time next year I should only have a few left, plus any new arrivals.
- The chronological Shaw Brothers project will also continue to be in full swing, as I make my way into the luscious 70s. Oh man, there is such a wealth of great martial arts films ahead of me there. I want to get those Clockwork Orange things to hold my eyes open and watch them all at once!
- The off-and-on Sam Fuller project will continue as well, and if I can stick to it, perhaps I can rip through the rest of his movies this year. I just find that I want to savor his movies rather than devour them, so most likely I’ll only end up watching two or three.
- I have many other projects I’d like to start (Godzilla, Jackie Chan, JCVD, Pedro Almodóvar, the list goes on) but I think they’ll have to wait till Year 4 unless I’m able to slowly sprinkle them in. We’ll see.
I can’t think of anything else to say, so thanks again! If you like the site, feel free to spread the word!
I can’t believe it but it’s already been a whole year! On this day in 2010 I officially started Silver Emulsion with a laughably bad review of a movie I did not enjoy, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. I endlessly re-wrote it, even after posting, trying to get it just right. I never did succeed, but I quickly realized that if I was going to make a go of this blog thing, I had to learn to let go! Overall, I’m pretty happy with where the blog is now in terms of my writing and I hope everyone else thinks so too.
One of my favorite parts of the site is the three Film Festival extravaganzas we did last year: A Fistful of Djangos (an eight film look at the spaghetti western Django and some of the many clone films), The Clones of Bruce Lee (a four film series by Uncle Jasper on… the clones of Bruce Lee) & Shaw Bros. Horror (a four film lineup of horror movies from the studio known for its amazing martial arts film). The Shaw Bros. Horror fest capped off the month of October, where we did nothing but horror movie reviews all month-long. These ultimately did not prove very popular, but I enjoyed doing them greatly and will definitely be continuing the tradition in the future.
In addition to those series, I’ve also been doing a couple of running series: one to eventually work my way through the entire Empire International / Full Moon catalog of films, and another to review all the films of one of my favorite directors, Samuel Fuller. Eventually if I ever finish one of these, I’d love to do an ongoing series on all the Godzilla films! Something to look forward to.
To celebrate this occasion, I’m taking the week off. I’ll resume regular postings next Tuesday. In the meantime I’ve trolled through the archives and dredged up some of my favorite reviews from the past year for your reading pleasure. I’ve also highlighted some of my favorite reviews from Uncle Jasper, my sometimes partner-in-crime. Thanks to everyone who’s been a part of the first year and here’s to another good one!
