You know, I bet that guy with the machine gun knew he was in a movie and just thought he would have unlimited ammo like most shitty action films.
As for the mixed tone of Hong Kong films, that sounds familiar to some of the anime I watch, and I love it when it can juggle multiple genres and styles at the same time. The strangest and most consistent tone shifts in anime are in comedies, which usually stop being comedies and turn serious at the end. Excel Saga, for instance, has the director as a self inserted character in the show, and somewhere in the final episodes he pops up acting like an addict who needs his joke fix and is suffering through withdraw.
It’s very weird to see one of tone shifts in action, and I still don’t think I’ve gotten used to it. But I think that’s why I like it so much. It’s an experience that can still throw me for a loop, so it doesn’t feel old and stale to me, at least not yet.
